Maharashtra Tourism Policy – 2024 (Amendment)
The Maharashtra Tourism Policy 2024, announced on July 18, 2024, is a comprehensive initiative aimed at transforming the state into a global tourism hub over the next decade. Building upon previous policies from 2006 and 2016 policies, this new framework seeks to attract approximately ₹1 lakh crore in private investment and generate around 18 lakh direct and indirect jobs. Key objectives include doubling tourist inflow, enhancing infrastructure, and promoting sustainable tourism practices. Recognizing Maharashtra’s emerging status in the tourism sector, the policy introduces a range of fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, such as capital subsidies, SGST reimbursements, electricity tariff concessions. This would encourage investment in various tourism sectors, including eco-tourism, rural tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), and cruise tourism. Additionally, it focuses on developing 50 sustainable tourism destinations, promoting cultural heritage, and ensuring visitor safety through initiatives like the Tourism Mitra Dal. Following its release, the policy underwent consultations with stakeholders and experts, leading to proposed amendments aimed at simplifying and enhancing its provisions and addressing the needs of emerging tourism sectors.
