The History of Thane

The region was later ruled by the Mushervan dynasty (531–578 AD) and then by the Shilaharas for nearly 400 years.

From 1535 to 1739, Vasai, a part of Thane, was under Portuguese control. Thane’s shipbuilding industry flourished during this period, with timber from Vasai being used to construct fleets for voyages to Europe and Mecca. However, after a long siege led by Chimaji Appa, the Marathas took control in 1739. Vasai remained under Maratha rule until 1802, when the Treaty of Vasai handed it over to the British, incorporating it into the Bombay Presidency.

Although Thane did not play a role in the 1857 Revolt, it prospered under British rule due to trade expansion. Finally, in May 1960, Thane officially became part of the Maharashtra state, marking its modern political identity.
