Introduction

According to the Maharashtra Government’s work regulations, the ministerial work has been divided into a total of 28 administrative departments and the subjects have been assigned to various departments accordingly. Under this, the subject of cultural work was assigned to the Social Justice, Cultural Work and Special Assistance Department and the subject of tourism was assigned to the Home Department.

The subjects of tourism and cultural work are complementary to each other. Various monuments under the Cultural Work Department are also considered as tourist attractions. The basic purpose of tourism is to visit historical and tourist attractions in various provinces, as well as to get information about the folk art and culture of various provinces, and accordingly, the exchange of unique art and culture in the state is carried out. Cultural exchange through tourism achieves the development of cultural and art sectors. In this regard, tourism and art / culture are intimate and complementary to each other and promote the tourism industry and achieve the development of tourism through art / culture. Therefore, since the subject of cultural affairs and tourism has a separate existence, it was under the consideration of the government that it is very necessary to have a separate administrative department for tourism and cultural affairs at the ministerial level to facilitate decision-making on policy matters that are complementary to both the departments at the ministerial level.

Accordingly, considering the proposal under consideration, a separate administrative department of tourism and cultural affairs was established vide notification No. Shakani-1006/Pr.No.23/2006/18 (R. & Ka.), dated 31st May, 2006 of the General Administration Department.
